Defence outlook 2023-4
Projected growth in defence roles.
There are over 60,000 members of staff in the Australian Defence Force, 16,000 members of the Australian Public Service, and 31,000 Reserves in the Australia’s defence sector, according to the Australian Government’s Transparency Portal.
Although this sector is not subject to the same boom-bust cycles as most others, the Department of Defence plans to grow its workforce by a set amount each year. Over 2023, this growth target has been 18,500, and a new target will be set for 2024 soon. In particular, STEM graduates are becoming more highly valued in Defence, though opportunities remain open for all levels of staff.
