How Do You Stand Out in Today’s Job Market?

The challenge for job seekers isn’t just about having the right qualifications; it’s about cutting out the noise when hundreds of other applicants are checking out and applying for the same role. We’ve seen what makes candidates stand out, and we want to share some inside scoop from some great recruiters, one in particular, Josh Hill.

Be Someone Employers Actually Notice

A challenge for today’s job seekers is visibility. When employers receive hundreds of applications for one position, how do you ensure yours doesn’t get lost in the pile?

“The biggest thing is actually being someone we can see,” notes Josh Hill from NorthStar Partners. “If you’ve got 700 people responding to a job ad, you need to find ways to differentiate yourself from the crowd.”

Video Introductions: A Game-Changer

One of the most effective yet underused methods for standing out is the video introduction. These brief, personalised videos allow recruiters to see the person behind the resume, your communication style, enthusiasm, and personality.

“Video intros are brilliant! I barely get them, but I absolutely love them!” Josh emphasises. “I’ll guarantee you if you send me a video intro, I’ll call you back even if your experience isn’t a perfect match, simply because it shows initiative and differentiates you from other candidates.”

This approach demonstrates genuine effort and gives employers a glimpse of what you might bring to their team beyond what’s listed on your CV.

The “Easy Apply” Trap

Many job seekers fall into the trap of relying on LinkedIn’s “Easy Apply” feature, which Josh considers “the worst thing that’s ever happened to LinkedIn.”

“It’s useless! Don’t ever look at them. One click done. That’s not showing genuine interest,” he warns.

While convenient, these one click applications often get lost among hundreds of similar applications. The ease for candidates applying means employers receive an overwhelming number of applications including a lot from candidates who aren’t interested nor qualified.

Making Connections That Last

Even when you’re not the perfect fit for a role, making a strong impression can lead to opportunities through referrals. Recruiters and hiring managers often have extensive networks and can connect promising candidates with other opportunities.

“If you show genuine effort and interest, I’ll do everything I can to refer you on to someone who can help you, even if the current role isn’t right,” Josh shares.

Key Takeaways for Job Seekers

  1. Prioritise visibility in your job search strategy, find ways to stand out from the crowd
  2. Create personalised video introductions to show off your personality and communication skills
  3. Avoid relying on “Easy Apply” features – invest time in tailored applications
  4. Focus on making genuine connections with recruiters and hiring managers that could lead to future opportunities

A job opportunity requires more than just submitting your resume and hoping for the best. By taking new steps to stand out, you’ll increase your chances of getting those job interviews AND you’ll be showing potential employers an initiative and creativity that is of huge value.
