And it’s usually because the real answer feels messy, or unfair, or like something that’ll count against them the second they say it out loud.

Let’s take the pressure out of it. Here’s what employers are listening for, what they aren’t, and how to give an answer that’s honest without verbally spilling more than you need to.

Why employers ask this question at all

Most hiring managers aren’t trying to catch you out. They’re trying to work out one thing: is the reason you left the last place likely to repeat itself here?

If you left because the drive was two hours each way, they want to know their site is closer.

If you left because the work dried up, they want to reassure themselves it wasn’t performance.

If you left after a falling out with a supervisor, they’re wondering whether you’ll fall out with theirs.

when you understand that’s the question underneath the question, it gets a lot easier to answer and you’re showing them the reason doesn’t apply here.

The mistake we see most often

Over explaining. By a long way. Someone gets asked a fifteen second question and gives a five minute answer, and somewhere they say something they’ve been holding onto for months. The frustration is understandable. I’ve sat across from people who’ve had a rough run and deserved better. But an interview isn’t the place to unload it, and the person across the table has no context for any of it.

The second mistake is the opposite problem. A one word answer, or a vague “it just wasn’t for me,” which leaves the interviewer to fill in the blank themselves. They’ll usually fill it in with the worst option.

A structure that works

Three parts, roughly twenty to thirty seconds all up.

The reason. One sentence. Neutral language, no blame.

The context. One sentence that makes it make sense.

The pivot. One sentence about what you’re looking for now, tied to the role you’re sitting in front of.

Here’s how that sounds in practice. “The workshop lost its main contract and hours got cut back to three days. I’d been there four years and I was happy, but I needed full-time work. What drew me to this role is the steady day shift and the fact you’re doing your own fabrication in-house.”

No drama. No badmouthing. It answers the question and moves the conversation on, which is exactly what you want.

When the reason isn’t a clean one

Not every exit is tidy, and pretending otherwise doesn’t help anyone.

You were made redundant. Say so plainly. Redundancy is a business decision, not a reflection on you, and every employer in trades, manufacturing and logistics has seen it happen. “The site downsized and my position went with it” is a complete answer.

You were let go. Own it briefly and show what changed. “It wasn’t the right fit and we parted ways. I took the feedback on board and I’ve been a lot more direct about asking questions early since then.” One sentence of accountability does more for you than ten of explanation.

You left without another job lined up. This worries people far more than it worries employers. Give the reason, keep it short, and be clear you’re ready now. Burnout, a family situation, a health issue that’s resolved. You don’t owe anyone the fine detail.

It was the culture, or the supervisor. This is the one where people slip. Describe what you want instead of what you had. “I work best somewhere with a bit of structure and clear communication between the floor and the office” tells them everything without a single negative word about anyone.

If you’re weighing up a move at the moment and you’re not sure how to frame it, that’s a conversation worth having before you’re sitting in the interview. It’s part of what we do for candidates across trades and services and logistics and supply chain roles in Melbourne and Sydney.

Say it out loud before the day

This is the bit people skip, and honestly it does help. An answer that reads well in your head can come out completely differently under pressure and in the moment.

Say it out loud. In the car, to your partner, to your recruiter. You’ll hear straight away if it sounds bitter, or rehearsed, or if you’re saying more than you meant to. Then trim it and leave it alone.

One last thing

Whatever happened at your last job, it doesn’t define what you’re capable of in the next one. We’ve placed people who were let go, walked out, or spent six months out of work sorting things out at home. None of it stopped them getting a good role with a good employer. How you talk about it makes far more difference than the thing itself.

If you’re job hunting in Melbourne, Queensland, Perth or Sydney and you’d like a hand getting your answers straight before an interview, get in touch or upload your CV and we’ll have a chat about what you’re after.

5 Job Interview Tips to Make a Great Impression (2025/2026 Edition)

Of all the questions that come up in an interview, this is the one candidates ring us about a lot.
