Roles are sitting open for weeks and applications come through often but don’t match the role. In the meantime, your existing team is absorbing this gap.

Dealerships and workshops I work with tell me this is one of the most consistently hard roles to fill in the automotive sector. It is not a new problem by any means, but it is getting harder. The vehicles are more complex, and the diagnostic requirements are higher, but the pool of qualified auto electricians has not grown to match these demands.

Why the Shortage Is So Deep

Auto electrical work has always been a specialist trade, but the nature of the job has changed considerably. Modern vehicles carry sophisticated electrical and electronic systems that require a level of diagnostic capability well beyond what was expected of the trade a decade ago. ECUs, CANBUS systems, advanced driver assistance technology and, increasingly, high-voltage EV components are now part of the daily workload in many workshops.

Producing a qualified auto electrician takes four years of apprenticeship training. Completion rates in automotive trades are below where they need to be, and the number of people entering the trade has not kept up with industry demand. It’s become a workforce that is now thin and ageing, and experienced auto electricians are seeming to be retiring faster than new ones are qualifying and entering the workforce. This creates pressure on service capacity, customer wait times and revenue.

Automotive Dealership Recruitment in Australia Workforce Planning Defines Profitability

Where Most Businesses Are Losing

The first problem I see is speed. A qualified auto electrician who is actively exploring options does not stay available for long. Mining, FIFO operations and specialist auto electrical businesses are all competing for the same candidates, and some of them move very quickly. If your internal approval process adds a week between interview and offer, you are losing people you could have had.

The second problem is how the role is presented to the market. Job ads that lead with a long list of requirements and say very little about what the workplace offers are not going to stand out in a candidate short market. Qualified auto electricians have choices right now. They are reading your ad and deciding whether your workshop is worth their time. If your posting reads like a compliance checklist, the answer is often no.

The third issue is dealerships that will only consider candidates with direct brand experience on their specific make are ruling out a significant portion of a small pool. A strong auto electrician with solid diagnostic fundamentals across multiple platforms can adapt to specific systems. Flexibility on background, where the core capability is clearly there, opens up your options considerably.

EVs Are Making This More Urgent, Not Less

The growth of electric and hybrid vehicles is adding more complexity to an already difficult hiring problem. High voltage system knowledge, battery diagnostics and EV-specific training are becoming requirements for workshops servicing late model vehicles, but the number of auto electricians with genuine EV experience is actually very small.

Dealerships that are investing in training existing staff now are building an advantage that will matter more as EV volumes increase. Those that are waiting for ready made EV-qualified auto electricians to appear on the market are likely to keep waiting. The better approach is identifying strong candidates with solid fundamentals and investing in the EV component as part of onboarding or ongoing development.

Why EV Technicians Are Now the Hardest Automotive Hire in Australia

What the Businesses Filling These Roles Are Doing Differently

The dealerships and workshops I work with that fill their auto electrician roles share a few common things:

They brief me before the role becomes urgent, not after.

They are clear and honest about what the role offers, not just what it requires.

They make decisions quickly when a strong candidate comes through.

Retention is just as important as recruitment. A workshop that has built a reputation for looking after its trades through fair pay, consistent hours, training investment and a culture that respects technical skills generates better referrals and loses fewer people.

The Honest Position in 2026

The auto electrician shortage is not easing in the near term. Dealerships that are reactive when a role falls vacant will keep finding it harder than those building a more deliberate approach to attracting and retaining this trade.

If your service department is carrying a vacancy or expecting one, the earlier we talk, the better the outcome. I place auto electricians into dealerships and workshops throughout Melbourne and Sydney, and I understand what both sides of this market need to make a placement work long term.

Get in touch or submit your vacancy and I will be in touch shortly.

If you run a service department or workshop and you have tried to hire a qualified auto electrician recently, you know how difficult it can be.
