\u200bDelivering over\u00a0<\/span>$131 billion<\/span><\/a>\u00a0to the Australian economy each year, the Australian Manufacturing and Food Processing industry is second in size only to the mining sector. And as the Food Manufacturing industry continues to expand, the growing, processing and delivery of seafood, baked goods, cheese, cereals, meats, UHT milk, fruit juice and snack foods continue to adapt to meet changing demand.<\/span><\/h5>\n

Over 330,000 people are employed<\/span><\/a>\u00a0in the Food Manufacturing sector, including the growing, logistics and equipment maintenance space. In the second half of 2020, keeping jobs within Australia and strengthening the Australian economy after the effects of Covid-19, will be crucial for the growth of the industry and is backed by the Federal Government\u2019s\u00a0<\/span>JobKeeper program<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u200bIMPACTS OF COVID-19 ON FOOD MANUFACTURING<\/span><\/b><\/h2>\n

Like the rest of the globe, the\u00a0<\/span>Australian economy continues to be significantly impacted<\/span><\/a>\u00a0by the spread of Covid-19. While many sectors have declined during this period, a\u00a0<\/span>recent Deloitte Agribusiness review<\/span><\/a>\u00a0found that Food Manufacturing and Food Retailing sectors have slightly expanded. The industry was initially\u00a0<\/span>impacted by the catastrophic summer bushfires<\/span><\/a>. FIRST AUSTRALIAN SEAWEED FACTORY OPENS<\/span><\/b><\/h4>\n

Four years ago, Australia\u2019s seaweed industry for food, pharmaceuticals and beauty products was still being developed in test tubes. This month, the first Australian seaweed factory opened in New South Wales, with a\u00a0<\/span>growth plan to reach $100 million by 2025<\/span><\/a>. Not only will this prospering industry create over 5,000 jobs in the first five years, but the facility also uses waste nutrients and carbon dioxide from a nearby wheat refinery to grow the seaweed.<\/span><\/p>\n

FAVOURABLE WINTER SEASON PREDICTS INCREASED CROP PRODUCTION<\/span><\/b><\/h4>\n

An\u00a0<\/span>11% increase is predicted for winter crop production<\/span><\/a>, thanks to favourable levels of soil moisture across South Australia, Victoria and New South Wales in June. This prediction looks to remain steady as per the Bureau of Meteorology\u2019s Quarter 3 Seasonal Outlook, which forecasts above average winter rainfall for Queensland and New South Wales, and average rainfall for most other agriculture regions.<\/span><\/p>\n
